This Earth Day, I thought I would inspire my readers with a list of all the ways that I (we) are green. In reality, I'm just curious to see how many I can come up with. See how many you do, and how many you can add.
Here we go!
- I'm a vegetarian.
- We cloth diaper and wipe.
- I wash on cold.
- With homemade laundry detergent, and vinegar as a fabric softener.
- We use real towels in the kitchen, as opposed to the paper variety.
- I unplug my appliances when they're not in use.
- I have drastically cut my plastic usage.
- We recycle: paper, plastic, metal, glass.
- Old clothing is donated, not thrown out. Even stained stuff will find a reuse through most donation centers.
- I buy organic whenever possible, including textiles.
- I love love love farmers markets.
- I turn the lights off in rooms that I'm not using.
- Most of the time, I drip dry.
- I use a reusable tote for groceries...when I remember.
- I have a copper-T (Paragard), the most environmentally-friendly contraceptive.
- Now, thanks in part to Hudson's presence, I drive the speed limit and don't waste gas.
- I buy used clothing for Hudson and myself whenever practical.
- I clean with eco-friendly cleaners, such as vinegar.
- I meal plan and waste less food.
- I have made a conscious effort to reduce my packaged food consumption.
- I have a Klean Kanteen reusable water bottle--BPA and other chemical-free.
- I have a house plant (peace lily) to help filter the indoor air.
- We're planting heirloom tomatoes at Grandma and Grandpa's this spring.
- I'm politically active on environmental issues.
- I make Hudson's baby food using organic or locally produced food.
- I breastfeed. (Although I'm sensing that weaning is on the horizon...)
- Almost all of the cosmetics I choose are unscented. A good chunk are organic.
- I have minimized and simplified my beauty routine--saving money, time, AND the environment.
- Hudson's soap and oils are unscented and organic.
- I consider seasonality when purchasing produce from the supermarket.
I say 30 is good enough for the moment. I will surely think of more later, as I have tremendous eco-guilt.
This Earth Day, Hudson is doing his part by soiling his cloth diapers and making sure they are getting properly used. Also, he has just finished his organic squash meal, prepared in a second-hand glass dish and fed with an heirloom (well, from now on...) silver spoon.
And I'm just positive he was trying to call his Congressional representatives about environmental issues on my phone a few minutes ago.
